WinXP Backup compatible with Win98s?

I use my 2nd hard drive to store the Backups made by MS in Win98. If my Master Drive goes out, can I retrieve the data from the Slave Hard Drive by placing it into a new computer (as a slave) using WindowsXP and running its Backup program?
