I'm trying to get 2 sata drive to run on my pc but i'm experiencing weird issues when both drives are connected. One has the OS, WinXP SP2 and the other only data. When i boot with both, after the WinXP screen, i'm getting the BSOD saying error 000xxx .

My bios sees both the on Sata 0 and Sata 1 port properly but i can't get WinXP to load when both are connected. I ran chkdsk /F on both, tried to reverse the Sata cable between both but only if i use the one with the OS and the other one in a USB enclosure can i get both to work together, otherwise it's i can't pass beyond this BSOD at startup.

What am i doing wrong?

when you installed xp, did you press F6 and install the sata drivers included with the motherboard? if not, then that's your primary issue you need to address 1st.

F6 with SATA driver are only needed for pre-XP SP1 and older motherboards, or if you want true ACHI in which case you would toggle ACHI in the bios then F6 the SATA drivers during XP's setup. Otherwise with XP SP1-2 and a motherboard made in the last 3 or so years all you need is to toggle IDE emulation in the bios (usually when you set optimized it does this anyway) and set the proper boot order. To me it sounds like you may simply need to make sure the SATA drives are in the proper boot order in the bios with the one with your OS being first, and also make sure if you do not have a SATA 3.0 drive but an older STA 1.5 GB/S mobo you may need to jumper the drive for the older standard (1.5 GB/S).

Thank you all for the great feedback! I'm not sure what's wrong but here is what i've:

First, I don't see any jumper on the back of the drive like i will on an IDE drive, these are Hitachi's Sata drives [750GB for C: and 1 TB for V:]. Where can i find the jumper? on the back i have the power, the sata and another connector that's it.

I'm running XPSP2 and used to have IDE drives so i never pressed F6 when i installed XP back then but i've the latest updates and when i connect C: 750GB through Sata and V:1TB through USB enclosure, Computer mgnt is seeing both drives, partition as basic NTFS, Healthy (C: system, V: Active)

Device mgr is not showing the C: as Disk 0 and the driver is from '01 but when i try through window update or the Hitachi cd to update it, it says that there is no newer version available.

When i put both drives on, my bio is showing the C: 750GB as sata 0 primary boot and V:1TB as sata 1 secondary and the trouble occured only after i pass the first window XP screen while XP is loading with both drives on.

If i put back my old IDE as C: and the V:1TB, it works so the conflict seems to be between the 2 sata drives.

The BSOD says : Stop 0x00000078 (0xF7C3ES24, etc...), when i google it i get that it's the NonPagedPoolSize value in the registry is set at more than 7/8 RAM

Is there a way to get them to work together?

Updated the bios and now i can see both from bios and with the C:750 on port 1 and the 1TB on port 0 i can can to XP but i cannot see the 1TB in XP, even under device mgr or computer mgnt it doesnt' show up even though i could see it as the second drive from the bios.

Now, if i inverse the sata cable, i get the BSOD again....

Why i cannot see the 1TB in winxp even though it shows up and boot up properly with both drive is a mystery to me....

Let me try to summarize where i'm at now:

I'm running XP SP2 and I've updated the bios and can see both drives from bios with the C:750GB on port 1 and drive V:1TB on port 0.

I get XP to load but i cannot see the 1TB once XP is running, even under device mgr or computer mgnt, the 1TB doesn't show up even though i could see it as the second drive from the bios.

Now, if i inverse the sata cable, i get a BSOD that says : Stop 0x00000078 (0xF7C3ES24, etc...), when i google it i get that it's the NonPagedPoolSize value in the registry is set at more than 7/8 RAM

If i put back my old IDE as C: and the Sata V:1TB, it works so the conflict seems to be between the 2 sata drives. My MB has 2 connectors so i'm thinking i should be able to run both at the same time.

The MB is Intel D865GLC, it has a P4 2.6c and 1gb of pc 3200 ddr400. This MB has 2 Sata connectors so the weird thing is that i can get both drives connected and to show up under the bios but once i've XP loaded the 1TB is not showing anywhere, that's really strange because if one of the Sata connector was bad, i wouldn't see both drives when i'm in the bios so i'm at lost.

Right now i run the old IDE as C: with the 1 TB sata by itself and it works, i really love to find how to get both sata drives to work though.

Try downloading the manufacturers' diagnostics utilities from their websites and running them.

Thanks for the suggestion but i couldn't find a "diagnostic tool" for Intel MB, i've found one but it was for chipset, is there another way to get it?
