WinXP and power off problems

I feel like a rank newbie, but ...

I installed WinXP home edition on my old rig to use at my office. It works fine except that it will no longer power off when Windows shuts down. I have to cut it off on the power supply switch on the back of the computer. The shut off worked fine when it had Win98, and I do not think I made any bios changes. What am I missing?

Thx

Go into Advanced power Management in the Control Panel and check that it is switched on/enabled.

I had this exact same problem when I upgraded my old system from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP. Even though I had all the correct Advanced Power Management functions in WinXP enabled, the system still didn't shutdown correctly by itself. What I did was, change the settings in the BIOS. Originally, my BIOS was set to ACPI mode, so I switched it to APM mode instead. Then it shutdown correctly and everything was fine.

There are also some systems that just don't shutdown no matter what. I actually work as a technical support, and where I work, we have a bunch of old systems that just refuse to shutdown by themselves after being upgraded to Windows 2000/XP. No matter what BIOS settings we've tried, Windows settings, Windows update patches, and the latest BIOS flashes, the computers simply refused to shutdown by themselves. We eventually just gave up and told the end-users that the problem was not solvable and told them to hold down the power button to power off the computer.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one with this problem. Could it be that older PSUs do not receive a needed signal properly from 2000/XP? Would replacing the power supply solve the problem or could this be related to the motherboard?
