winXP and media player 6.4

Can you still use MP6.4 in XP? I hate MP7, and I don't really want to use MP8. I installed MP7 to get codecs and such, but ran mplayer2.exe and set it to be the default player. Can you do this in XP?

yes, you just type in mplayer2 again.. but I have to say.. wmp8 is much faster than wmp7.. its almost usable.. plus in fullscreen mode you can once again see the controls... a feature that was missed in wmp7 but loved in 6.4

SendTrash: so does wmp8 have a smaller, non-bloated companion for the web like wmp7 has? (mplayer2.exe)

Just like when you install Media Player 7 in 2K or 98, Windows XP still has media player 6.4 in the program files/windows media player/ directory.

So what then would be the advantage of using wmp7 or 8 versus 6.4? Aside from codecs that just don't seem to install right when 6.4 autodownloads, 7 seemed like a huge PITA for me.....slow loading, not pausing a video if you clicked on the playback window, etc. Even if 8 has slight improvements, I don't see why anyone would use it when they could use 6.4
