WinXP and CABS???

I used to use CAB files for Win9x so I could chuck the CD aside for drive updates and all.

Is there a way to copy CAB files for WinXP? Or is it not necessary? I ask because I browsed through the WinXP CD and Im kind of clueless as to what files to copy if I do create CAB files on my HD.

Copy the I386 directory from your WinXP CD to your hard drive. That provides all of the files that XP will need to update your system.

The only tricky part is that when you install any XP service packs, you will need to extract the SP files, and copy the SP I386 folder over the CD I386 folder on your hard drive. Over write all files from the SP I386. This will make sure that you are using the latest versions of files and not mixing "old" CD files with SP releases.

hate to sound stupid but extract the SP files how?

I already have SP1 installed so is there a directory where it's already extracted?

You will need to download the network redistributable SP. Once you have it, open it up and let it extract the files and leave the dialog hanging. Find the extracted I386 SP folder and there you go.

I don't believe so. Driver.cab is about 50 meg and includes all the drivers the OS is bundled with. It's also updated by the SP's. You might still need to copy the i386 directory if you want to install optional components (such as the personal web server). But for drivers, you should just need that cab.
