Okay, afters years and years of "progress" the Windows family of OSes has seen... Sure, I kind of expect now a quick fix for this problem upon changing sata mode (AHCI/IDE) in BIOS.

Use case: need the IDE mode to recover a hard drive (software doesn't work appropriately in AHCI mode).

Come on, show me the way. Windows 10 must have advanced in this department too, no? Meh, not so much an upgrade over previous Windows then. Little things like these, annoy me the most. If Microsoft were going to dumb down everything, they are sure as hell could have imagined to dumb down this scenario as well, so people wouldn't have to do things manually anymore! I agree, it's not common, but would have been a nice touch, nonetheless.

The way I did it in the past was before switching the BIOS settings, for a completely setup Windows system, was to install the drivers before you switch. This way when the system reboots and is changed to AHCI (which is a must for good SSD performance!) the drivers will be there and Windows should work.

All this being said, can't remember exactly how I did this, but it was with both Windows 7 and XP systems.

I suppose it's the same way we did in Win 7/8. Registry tweaks in this case (I already have the AHCI driver). I am just frustrated that I have to do the same shit again in Win 10, which supposed to be super easy, advanced and best OS MS has ever made. Some things just never change. Heh.

well to be fair,
1 - this is not something an average user would do day to day and
2 - you could pretty well change about anything, but the one thing that is always picky would be the storage controller that windows is installed/booted from
