Winver at startup

I had this happen when I got some bad malware or something. I got rid of that, but I still have winver popping up every time I login to windows. It's XP SP3.

I don't see it in the startup area of msconfig. What gives?

There are several ways to get programs to run at startup. A popular one is in certain areas of the Registry. You could try searching the Registry for "Winver" and see if it's in a section that causes it to run at startup.

winver.exe is an applet that resides in Windows/System32. As is stated above, it can be called by a Registry entry. You might also check to see if it is in the Services section of MSCONFIG. For a quick test, you could rename the file to WINVER.OLD and then run a reboot and see what happens.
