Hi

I wanted to buy a Tv Tuner Card for my laptop/PC

i came across the following tuner card on amazon, it seems to have good reviews, what do you guys think of it

Hauppauge WinTV USB 2 Personal Video Recorder
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI...=sr_8_xs_ap_i4_xgl/026-2951477-2228440

it is a bit pricey but allows recording programs, i intend to use it both on a laptop as well as my pc

do you guys know if it gets its power from the USB port or does it need to be powered independently?

no I bought that one on Black Friday here in the states. The day after Thanksgiving. Im not sure if there is a USB one that doesn't need a PS. You could try something like this.

i'd stay away from usb type video capture/tv tuners. usb doesnt really provide enough bandwith for such purposes so expect lots of dropped frames etc.
also i looked at the specs in the link and i see no mention of capture/playback resolutions. ususally usb devices such as these are not able to produce anything near the quality that a decent pci card would.

Hi

I needed one which one fit both my laptop and my desktop,

i thought a USB2 capture card would not drop any frames since it works at 480 Mbps(?)?

fo a laptop should i just go for a PCMCIA solution then?

My Inspiron 9300 came with the WinTV external USB 2.0 tuner. It works great with my Comcast cable. The only drawback is that I do not have a Comcast digital box so the TV signal is analog.

I also use it on my old (in laptop years) Latitude C840 which only has a 2.0 Ghz P-4 and USB 1.1. I added a D-Link USB 2.0 PCMCIA card and it works just as well. Of course the 15" screen and video card in the Latitiude do not match the 17" 1920X1200 resolution screen and 256MB 6800 Go video in the 9300. I am also using the 9300's MCE 2005 USB IR receiver and remote control attached to the second port on the D-Link USB 2.0 card.

I recommend the WinTV USB 2.0 as a reasonbly priced external TV solution that can easily be moved from PC to PC as needed..
