I just got an email about winter safety tips and this is one of the tips:

If you are trapped in your car, turn on your hazard lights, hang a distress flag from your window or antenna, and remain in your car. Run the engine and heater only as often as needed to stay warm and be sure to open a downwind window to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Huddle with other passengers and use your coat for a blanket.

The antenna is the highest point on a car, the most likely thing to be seen should the car get completely covered in snow while you are asleep.

Why would you be asleep in your car?

I think this is assuming you manage to get stuck on a road that nobody else is on in the middle of nowhere in a snowstorm. Unless you have the right gear and training you would be dead within a mile. Far better to wait it out in that circumstance.

Why would you be asleep in your car?

why would you sleep outside your car in a snow storm. shelter is usually the best bet if you are outside in frigid temperatures otherwise your risk hypothermia, frostbite or death.

its very rare that 6 feet of snow falls all at once.

Oh you took it literally. I think point of the communication was assuming that your car wont drive anywhere and that since it is freezing out you have to stay in the car or risk freezing to death. In which case you can leave the car briefly to reach the antenna. Not literally you can't get out of your car because an avalanche buried it under 18 feet of snow.

James Kim was able to get out of his car but was stranded. He decided to find a way out and that didn't seem to work out too well.

Assuming the antenna doesn't retract when the car is turned off.

then you can use there suggestion to mount it by the window as an alternate.

I don't know that I would remember to open a window in order to avoid carbon monoxide. I guess I'd be dead.

this isn't an issue for most modern vehicles.

Honestly though, think about it. If you were driving down a road, saw a car parked, windows frosted over, one window an inch down and a shirt on the antennea, would you think that that car is in distress?

yes but I'm not a state trooper so I would ignore it.

The window down part makes no sense at all. The exhaust isn't venting into the car, and the car isn't hermetically sealed anyway. The only thing that opening the window will do is let the heat out faster.
