I'm looking for a really warm jacket. Something that looks formal and is not too expensive. What do you guys recommend? Throw in some extra recommendations for other winter gear for extra reps.

Well, nothing really beat Canada Goose brand down jackets.

You should know their rep if you live in cold country, otherwise research them.

They're the best made, warmest jackets (you've seen their jackets in movies where the characters are in the arctic).

You may get lucky and get one on sale on Ebay/elsewhere for $300. I think I paid ~$360 for my city jacket out of season.

Cabelas.com also makes good down jackets for deep winter....not as good as Canada Goose though.

I have a Columbia winter coat. Cost $130, dunno what I did without it before. It's lasted me 6 years and is still in great condition. I wear the inner jacket in spring/fall when it's not wet. I wear the outer jacket in the spring/fall when it's wet because it's designed to dry fast. I wear it combined when it gets >30

My ex bought me a peacoat from express (or somewhere like that) that I never wore because I lived in socal. When I moved to NYC, I would wear it down to about 30, sometimes into the 20s if I had a sweater on underneath it (usually I was fine with just a Tshirt under it). Below that, I had a parka I wore that did a pretty good job. Never had anything other than jeans though, which led to some numb legs below 20 deg.

Go to LLBean and look up winter coats. The Baxter Parka is not formal wear but it's crazy warm and will last.

Hit up Burlington. I got my Columbia winter jacket for $40-50 bucks 7-8 years ago. I also got a Calvin Klein wool jacket for $60 bucks.

something from mountain hardware. steepandcheap has their stuff regularly at discount. i got a thin fleece for 80 bucks a few weeks ago. its cold and windy today and their "air shield" fleece kept me reasonably warm in the craptasticness with no draft to bug the hell out of me. was about $80. they have some down available for under $200.

a buddy has a really nice columbia coat he is in love with, but ive had a couple of columbia things over the last couple of years that gave out before they should have that has put me off the brand a little.

Bean's barn coat with the arctic lining? I have gotten some great deals at Cabella's website. Last year I got their version of the canvas barn coat with a winter lining for $30.

Anyone know the name for a barn coat that is just a bit longer than most? I like the looks of them but I need something that hangs a bit lower for concealed carry.

I've lived in MN for almost my whole life. There isn't a single person I know with one of these jackets, not one. Hell, I've gone skiing in Lutsen MN in -30 weather and never would think of anything but NF/Columbia/MHW.

my friend told me today he got this.

http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/outerwear/wool/PRD~05536/05536.jsp?color_name=charcoal

said there is a 25% going around as well.

Have never owned one, but the description says "wool". I'm assuming it's 100%?

Otherwise, pea coat at Banana Republic for around the same price, Gap for under $200, Old Navy for under $100. Pea coats are very casual/formal -- not quite formal, but not quite casual, so good for all. Bad thing is they're usually wool (no likey water) and no hood.

Canada Goose is very popular, but it starts at $500+, IIRC. Gap anorak for $150-ish, BR parka for $300:

Columbia's fine, but I find they have too much shit going on with all the separate detachable layers.
