Winter coat brand recommendations?

So I'm looking at buying a new coat to replace my aging Columbia one. Any good brands I should know about besides Columbia and North Face?

I've had some tremendous Sierra Designs and Marmot shells. What are you going to be using it for? Dropping a load of cash on technical outwear when all you're going to be doing is walking from your car to the door really isn't worth it. If you're skiing or something I'd definitely recommend those brands.

Where do you live and what will you use it for?

It'll be just for everyday use really. Maybe the occasional ski trip. But I'm not going to be climbing Everest in it or anything. I live in the flyover states, but it gets pretty cold (wind chill is -11 right now). I'd rather spend a little more and get a good product that will last than have to replace it in a few years.

Depends on your build. I would also suggest checking out REI if you have one near you. They have some really good REI branded shells and parkas.

I bought a jacket from American Eagle on clearance a couple years ago and it's actually pretty decent quality. It's warm and has lots of pockets and seems to be fairly waterproof. It reminds me a lot of a motorcycle jacket, in that it has vents you can zip open for better air flow. That may be a standard "ski jacket" feature that I've just never seen before.

It also has pockets for an mp3 player with cord ports and a goggle/sunglasses pouch. Overall, it's a great jacket, especially considering I paid like $60 for it. I'm not sure how it'd be for skiing, since I don't ski, but it's great for everyday wear when it's snowing/sleeting/wet outside.

We'll see how warm it really is - we're supposed to hit 0 degrees here in the next week.

i bought a nice columbia a few years ago, hoping to upgrade the jacket at some point.. but living in California and not being an avid ski/snowboarder I don't get much chance to wear it, much less justify a new jacket... 🙁

I double the REI recommendation  they have a lot of stuff and their own branded stuff which is usually pretty good quality.

I recall Amazon having some TERRIFIC deals on Columbia stuff a month or so ago. I ended up giving the jacket to my brother because it didn't have a powder skirt so it was useless for me on the slopes. Check Amazon to see if they still have good deals on their Columbia jackets.

Carhartt... 600,000 Alaskans can't be wrong. 😉

I only bust that out when it drops below 0. 😛

It's ALWAYS below zero. Except this week. I've had Columbia and REI. Once you wear a Carhartt you'll never wear anything else. Plus, it will probably outlive you. They're frickin' indestructable.

QFT! I've worn Carhartt products for 30 years...top of the line work-wear. Not always the most stylish, but very functional and well built.

Another Alaskan vote for Carhartt!

Usually stores carrry their own (e.g. Gap and friends), but most of them are the over-sized, fur hood, army-want-to-be variety. Personally, I'm too cheap to get a new winter coat and because they none of them fit my short self properly, I hate wearing them. Saved me $200 this year, but freezing with my -3C capable jacket or feel crappy about my oversized 4 year old one.
