WINS - What is it?

Hello all,

I have tried to find some material to describe WINS to me and how it is different from DNS. However, not knowing what it stands for, all of my internet searches show me people who have won stuff. 🙂

When I try to search for WINS and networking, I find all the people who have won networking stuff. 🙁

Can someone explain it to me or please point me in the right direction? Thanks a lot.

windows internet name service I believe. Search microsoft and you'll find plenty. It is used for netbios over IP name resolution. That is the biggest difference - DNS is a domain name service used for all kinds of "internet domain" stuff. WINs is strictly for netbios names.

hope that helps.

It's a Pain

😀

Anyway, wins was created by MS to do name resolution. For instance if your computer name is GaretPC, WINS will help resolve your computer name into an IP address.

There is a whole book on Wins. If you search Microsoft KB, you'll find many whitepapers on Wins as well.
