WinPE

Has anyone had the occassion to use this? I'm hoping to use it along with a Data Recovery program to recover some data lost on a 20GB Firewire drive I have (the Data Recovery program works in Windows, but I'm told it works best through a bootable floppy made by the program). The problem is, because the drive is firewire, the boot disk that's made by the program doesn't have drivers for it (I don't believe there are actually DOS drivers for a firewire drive), but I'm thinking that perhaps WinPE might allow me to do this.

Problem is, I'm not entirely sure how to get where I need to be to begin the process. Any thoughts/helpful suggestions?

Microsoft probably won't give you what you need. However, look for "Bart's PE Builder". He got a cease & decist from MS, but you might find old copies floating around, or he may have found a way to do it wihtout upsetting them (suppoesdly he used some component that you're not allowed to distribute).

edit: it requires your XP CD and uses a bunch of files from it

He's had a legal version available in beta form for some time now.

It's basically W2K running off of read only media.

Not to nit pick but it's XP or Win2K3, I don't think it's possible with Win2K.

And you have to realize it's win32 only, no win16, DOS, posix or OS/2 apps will run.

Thanks for the recommendation, guys; I think I'm going to be trying it when I get some "spare" time. 🙂

Actually, I've been told that WinPE comes with SP1, so if you get an integrated copy of WinXP (with a newer PC, for example), it's already there. I'm more interested in the functionality that it provides, and perhaps some sort of walkthrough, if anyone has any working knowledge of it.

The WinPE built by the tool in jliechty's link uses whatever CD you give it, so if you have a SP1 CD it'll have SP1 on the image it makes.
