Hey guys, have a real annoying problem getting my main pc to boot up. I'm running win2k pro edition. After shutting it down and trying to reboot it, I get the following error:

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows 2000
Setup using the original Setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start the repair.

I have tried running the repair several times and it says that it makes changes but it still does not go through. I have tried making a seperate boot disk with the ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini and it still does not boot right. My boot.ini is correct also. I did not have any emergency repair disks made from my install so maybe that is why the repair did not work from the win2k bootdisks.

I did go into the console and tried using the system.alt file (which was the exact same filesize, same date, and same time as the original file 'system') and it still did not work. I also tried using the system.save file as the 'system' file but that only lead to a blue STOP screen. (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE).

At this point, I don't know what else to try other than installing win2k over my original one. I would rather not do that as I've had this same install for almost 2 years now and it would be alot of confusion to set all the settings back.

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks...

Wel the error message means your system hive could not be loaded. Your system hive holds the registry, hardware configuration, etc.. all of the important stuff. When it's messed up usually a re-install is the best option for repair, and usually its your only option.

But...but...but.....2 years! Therein lies your problem!

Get your Win2k CD out. It's time to re-install. Your system will probably perform so much better after a fresh re-install anyways you'll think you just upgraded :D
