So have you gotten your ticket?

The odd are well against you, I was listening to 97.1 FM Talk and was listening to some stats on winning the lotto. You are 10 times more likely to get struck by lightning than win the lotto. You are 6,000 time more likely to die from a falling object than to win the lotto. There was one that was a bit scary, I forget the actual # but I think it was like 9,000 times more likely to get murdered than to win the lotto.

I think I have a good chance, wouldn't you say? I'm gonna pick up maybe $5 bucks worth of tickets before the main drawing.

So I guess heres an interesting question (an unrealistic one at that)
What is the first thing that you would do if and when you won the lotto, (for this example lets say the $85 mil, so technically with taxes and all $46 or so mil)

I do not know what I would do, but I would like to hear your reactions :) and please don't say you'll buy 100 1.7 ghz cpus, dont be such a damn nerd!

First, I'd faint like a southern lady.

After being revived, I'd call a lawyer and ask to have it setup so I could get the cash and no one know I won. It's a proven fact that winning the lotto can be a major PITA. "Friends" start crawling out of the woodwork.

I'd setup some stable investments, chill for a year, then live off the interst checks.

I think I'll pick up $3 or $5 dollars worth of tickets on the way home. I realize the odds are against me, but you never know! And really, I'm not going to miss the $5.

well, if you hit the 85 million jackpot, after taxes you would take home about 45 million... so start there...

I think my dad and I figured it out once when the Big Game lotto got crazy high. If you took the lump sum, put it all into US Tresury securities (or bonds, forget which), you, your kids, (and depending on inflation) at least one of your great grandchildren could live off the intrest comfortably. This was barring any estate tax, which bascily cuts it in half after you die unless you distribute it correctly

I cannot even begin to imagine having 46 million dollars. How awesome would it be to go into somewhere and just buy something you want and not have to ask about the price?

BTW, when do they pick the numbers? I never play the lotto, but I want to make sure I get my tickets before they do the drawing.

I admit it! I am a geek. The first thing I would do is buy a nice car. Then I would get online and start ordering my dream computer. Dual AMD, 15000 rpm boot drive, 4 x 180GB SCSI RAID, you get the picture. :)

Wrong.

In California, IF you choose payments you get 42% or about 35.7 million. You immediately get 20% paid to taxes so about 28.5 to start depending on your income bracket.

If you choose payments, you get 26 payments paid annually and have to face the taxman each year. However, you can sell you interests in the payments for about 65% which is a much better deal.

I think I could still work with that. It would be hard, but I would manage to get by.

Well,,,if you decide to take the lump sum, wouldnt you need to take the present value of 45 mil at a given (market?) interest rate? After all that, your winning is worth about as much as the price you paid for the ticket. Well, maybe not:D

What question?

:D

Ok- 1.

<< So have you gotten your ticket? >>

. Yes. Two tickets of a dollar each from last week's "winnings".

2.

<< What is the first thing that you would do if and when you won the lotto >>

[/i]

Sign my ticket. Secondly, deliver it to the lottery office to have it confirmed. However, the chances are so unlikely of my winning, I do not really seriously consider or fantasize about the results.
