Winmodems

Just a quick question: Does a "Winmodem" use CPU during the time it is not connected? I'm asking this because I have a software modem that I want to install only to be used for receiving Caller ID. Thanks in advance.

What a Winmodem uses the CPU for is to do the "DEModulation" part of the modem, so it would seem to me that they wouldn't use any CPU time during nonusage. I dunno though, maybe someone could enlighten this topic more, I'm just going by my instinct and a small bit of knowledge about Winmodems.

If used for receiving caller ID then you will have to run an app in the background. That app will use some CPU cycles though not much when not active. The modem itself doesn't use any CPU cycles when it is off of course.

From what I have read a winmodem doesn't use the cpu unless it is on and receiving/transmitting data. The modem on hold program will use a very small amount of cycles until a call comes in and then the usage will increase.

Exactly! Back when I was on AOL + Winmodem (Worst Setup Ever!) that is what I observed
