I am looking to add a dial-up modem to a PC I am building for my father.
He does not have DSL or cable and uses the PC namely for e-mails.
Could someone recommend a low cost winmodem that can be used with Ubuntu 8.04?
Thanks in advance.

jeebus, you can probably get a hardware modem for under $30 easily that would work, and it would probably be a better idea.

but search the ubuntu forums and see what modems people are using without any problems, that will probably find what you want quickly.

The cheapest I found on ebay was $50 including shipping. Please steer me to the $30 ones. :)
In the mean time, I bought a $10 Hummingbird winmodem at Frys that says it is Linux compatible. I'll check it out tonight.

Do they even still make hardware modems? I would think with the market for modems being so small all you'll find is old re-bagged winmodems. I wouldn't even think Winmodems are made anymore, they're just selling old stock.

Let us know how it goes MaskedAvenger, I have some of the worst memories using a Winmodem on my Windows 3.1 and Win 95. I'm trying to fathom Winmodem + Linux lol. GOOD LUCK and Godspeed

OK, I installed the $10 Frys modem (its uses a Conexant chip) and downloaded and installed the 8.04 Ubuntu driver courtesy of Dell. :D

Next task: install the Linspire version of Juno (yes, dial-up Juno circa 1999).

I really don't know Linux at all so this takes a lot more effort than it should. But I figure its good to learn to set up more rigs for December's Folding contest!

After all, if chimps can write Shakespeare then I can decode Ubuntu.
