Winmodem?

Just read an article that winmodems are OK. I know that gamers count them as 'not that good' because it takes from the CPU ...but, since I am lookin to get the new MSI Pro 2 for my Duron 650, I plan to use the cheapest modem I can get to start...that works well.
Any good to be told on your winmodem? I will even take the bad ...and someone may have a recommendation for a REAL PCI modem. DO they make one?

yes, there are. But again, very very expensive. There are only a few though, I know 3com has one. Go there, and find a high price (in the 70 or 80 bucks range) PCI modem. most likely it is hardware modem.

A modem that I like that is close to Winmodem pricing, is the Diamond Supra Express 56i Pro

I had several Lucent PCI winmodems..they all performed very well and cheap too.. Didnt rob much from the processor that I ever saw..IMHO

I've been thru several modems, and had heard that a good ISA modem could be close to any PCI modem. I get 50,666 regularly on my USR ISA hardware modem. That also frees a PCI slot. This one has X2 technology, whatever that is. Retailed for $130. Purchased on auction like new for $30. It was a dream to set up - slip it in, turn on computer, and I had new modem automatically. Good luck

I agree. It is amazing to me that board makers put 'stubby' below that last PCI instead of an ISA. Outside of Abit, Epox ..and a few others ..the CNR is there to stay ...looks like.

Neos, I also tried one some of the gamers like, Diamond Supra Express 56e external. Firstly, I didn't like the extra wires outside the case. Worse, it is intended to be left ON all the time. Well, I didn't like that because that power transformer was always hot, and the heat bothered me from a safety standpoint, especially if I was away for a while. BUT, when I turned it off and later on again with the master control I have on everything, the modem kept re-installing itself. Maybe that was operator error on my part. Bottomline, the above USR is great for me.

i have a PCI 56k LT winmodem. works just the same as my external banksia wave 56k. i get connections between 50-54k every time.

if you are planning on running linux, you may have some problems getting a winmodem working.
