WinModem vs Controller based, is there a real difference.

Hi,
I was wondering if a winmodem and a controller based is really different in terms of performance or anything else. I know that a winmodem relies on the computer to do its thing and that the controller based does its thing by itself, etc. I have a internal winmodem and also a external motorola modem, so that's why I'm asking. Is there a performance difference and what would the advantage of a controller based modem be.

Thanks

Alex

For normal browsing, no. For online 3D gaming, yes.

The problem is that the CPU is heavily tied up in a 3D game (say, like Q3) and although managing the modem requires little CPU power, sometimes the CPU may be to busy to refresh the modem in a given cycle and data may get queued until the next cycle. While this is a small delay, it shows up as higher pings. Winmodems can cost you 10 - 50 ms off you ping.

Stick to the external modem.
