winmodem resource use? is it bad?

hi 🙂
i need to buy a modem for faxing and possibly using for this program that tapes everything to harddrive that is said over the phone. now i can buy a winmodem type 56k for 20$ or alot more for a hardware modem. i am wondering what kind of hit the winmodem takes on resources and if it takes them all the time or just when in use(not when the phone is).

i dont plan on using it for games or anything else so if it only hogs resources when i actually use it that would be fine but i also want my resources free to play my games so if it is always using them then i am not sure.

any help or info would be appreciated 🙂

ohh and the prices are in canadian.

The CPU hit with software modems these days is tiny, you'll never even notice it. When it's not actively transferring data, there's essentially no CPU usage because it's not having to process any signal. Some hardware modems actually have higher CPU usage and lower performance. Software modems are just less compatible since it's dependent on the manufacturer creating drivers for each OS.
