I once had a PCtel based modem. Don't know what specific number, but that thing was a fresh steaming pile of orangutan sh!t. It pinged in the high 400s on a connection that other modems got 100 or so on.

I have several LT modems in various computers around the house. They are good modems, I have one in a P100 and it runs great. CPU usage on the LT winmodems is basically nonexistent from the user perspective.

Stay the hell away from PCTel Modems!

Now, with that said, the LT Winmodem is the best modem for the price and one of the best winmodems......period. :)

A good, cheap Hardware Modem is the Diamond Supra Express 56i Pro

PCTel chipsets are garbage. Plus, the driver support is almost non-existent. You're much better off with a Lucent LT if you don't go with a hardware-based modem.

I'm very happy with my Aopen FM-56-PM. :)

Here's what the god of winmodems himself, Modus, said in another thread:

"Yes, that AOpen FM56-PM that denilfloss mentioned is a good deal. It uses a Conexant (Rockwell) HCF chipset, which is the same sort of technology as the Lucent LT."

:)

Thanks guys. I guess I'll stick the LT Winmodem.

AMB, Thanks but the new MB i planning to get wouldn't have any ISA slots. BTW the SupraExpress modem kicks ass (48000 kbps )consistancy using the its old firmware.

My thoughts:

stay the hell away from PCtel -- they suck big time, no drivers work worth crap.
LT works very well, though I have not tested them on a solid line.
Motorola SM56, I have seen connect consistantly at 52kbps on a clear line.

just don't get PCtel, you'll regret it

You guys got to be kidding??? LT Winmodems have got to be the worst modems out there. I have been doing internet tech support for a few years for over 100 ISP's, LT winmodems cause the most problems ever! other bad ones are the HSP Micromodems, Connexant Soft K56 and the Motorolla SM56!!

The SupraExpress is also a hadware modem, not a winmodem. :)

One benefit to LT modems is you can use them with linux using Lucent's binary-only driver. I have done this and it works well. Only problem is you can't use the driver with any kernel >2.2.14, but oh well.
