WinME: "windows protection error" on shutdown

When trying to "shutdown", I get the blue screen of death, that says "Windows protection error, you need to restart." Then upon restarting, it always starts ScanDisk.

My Logitech mouse also locks up every now and then. Could this all be the result of the mouse driver? I have the newest Logitech drivers. I also did a clean install of WinME. Anyone have any suggestions?

Windows ME has a known compatibility problem with newer Nvidia drivers on shutdown. Install older drivers or wait a while for new ones to come out (the lastest one, 6.31, does not fix it)

If you want to get rid of the scandisk at startup, install x-setup 5.7 and tweak it. But it is not advised.

I see only a few problems with ME so far.
First of all the mouse...ME doesn't seem to like Logitech drivers. The Logitech drivers had my cursor floating all over the place. I removed them and use the standard mouse drivers with ME and turned down the sensitivity and everything stabilized.
A lot of people were getting problems related to lockups pertaining to something in IE 5.5.
There is a newer version of IE 5.5 that seems to be clearing up problems within Win ME and you may try to see if it clears up your problems.
The version of IE with ME is 5.50.4134.0100. The new one is 5.50.4134.0600. If you have someone with a CD from Maximum PC I am told that there is the new version on that CD if you want to avoid the download time.
Good luck.
