WinMe/Win98/Win95 Kernel question

I recently read a post on site discussing games in which the "technical expert" of the site talked about the problems with winMe. He went onto say that the winME kernel was based on the win95 kernel. Now I know that both 98 and Me are based on the 95 kernel, but he went on to say that with winME microsoft just added features to a win95 kernel. Therefore they did not based it on win98.

Did that make sense? Possibly not so here is another explanation. I thought that winME was based on the win98 Kernel, which in turn was based on the win95 kernel. Some a little like this:

Win95 -> Win98 -> WinMe

However they way he explained it was that WinMe was not based on win98, rather it was based on win95 directly. Sort of like this.

Win95 -> Win98

Win95 -> WinMe

Ok, now which one is right. I tried looking for some articles but could not find this mentioned. I figured this is the next best resource. If you know where any articles are that say this, could you please point me to them?

Thanks.

In theory all 9x based OSes are based on the 95 Kernel. It was the first one written for the 9x series of OSes. Now, just look at that 98 was based on 95, and ME is also based on 95, but includes many similar functions that were incorporated into the 98 Kernel, and then some. So yes, ME is based on the 95 kernel, as is 98, since it is the base 9x kernel that was written.

(Mind you, I'm just thinking logically, so I may or may not be correct)
