Hi All:
___I have tried in vain 3 times from a completely formatted disk each time to install Win ME w/ an ATI Rage Fury card in an Abit BH6 ver. 1.01, Celeron 300a @450, AGP/FSB 2/3, CL?s Ensoniq Audio PCI, 3Com/USR 33.6K ISA modem, and 64 MB PC100 CAS2 PNY SDRAM. I have had 3 unsuccessful attempts. I immediately after the third failed attempt formatted the drive again and replaced the ATI Rage Fury with a CL?s TNT2 Ultra. The install went as smooth as usual. I have installed Win ME on an (2) Abit BF6?s, and (1) Abit BH6 ver. 1.1 using an ELSA GeForce ERAZOR X and (2) Matrox G400?s without any trouble at all as well.
___The stall or black screen happens just as the drivers are being loaded on initial install (second reboot in). I never see the driver load screen, just black. I have let it sit for over 5 minutes but it is just hung. I can get into safe mode at this point but this does me no good to try and install a Win98 SE ATI Rage Fury driver from there. I reboot and get the black screen with no drive activity again. I even used the good install of the CL?s TNT2 Ultra, shut down, installed the ATI card from here and it sees the new card, installs the Win ME drivers, and than asks to reboot. On reboot, it is hung with a black screen as usual.
___I had a look at MS?s Win ME page with nothing unusual reported over there. Rage3D has nothing in their forums regarding this problem. Rage Underground does not seem to have the answer either. Even the ATI newsgroups going back 7 days are almost empty of this problem. There has to be someone out there that has installed Win ME with the ATI Rage Fury but the best I have seen so far is RC2 and the install worked fine. I must be screwed up but the install works just as expected once the ATI card is removed and the CL?s TNT2 Ultra is placed back in. This one really has me stumped ?
___If you have any idea what is Fubarred on my daughter?s college PC for this install, I would greatly appreciate a hint, clue, guess, or even a lie at this point, which would be better than where I am currently. So far, I only have ~ 4 hours of wasted time on this damn ATI card with WinME.
