I've got Win98se and am wondering which would be better for what I use my PC for.

I do mostly gaming, like Q3A, HL/OF/CS, UT, AOE, etc
I also use Photoshop fairly regularly
office 2000 work on a regular basis

which is better? Besides 2K being built on NT, how is Me better than 2K? Which is a bigger recource hog??

WinME sucks. If you play games a lot, then Win2k might not be a good solution. If Win98 isn't giving you trouble, stick with it. Though Win2k is a lot more stable, but you shouldn't think about running it with less than 256 MB of RAM.

WinMe sucks because of:

1. The system restore utility (which can be disabled, though).
2. Crashes in almost every situation. Dunno how common, but you hear about them very frequently even "offline", that is, from unhappy friends.
3. No MS-FLASH prompt (and no built-in possibility to boot to one), but correct me if I'm wrong.
4. Microsoft steals our money with it...

I'd go for Win98 FE fully patched as numero uno, but Win98 SE is OK too.

But Win2k is sweet for surfing/moving files, though...

Win2k is fine for gaming, I do all my gaming on it.

And Microsoft is fully replacing Win9x/ME with WinXP which NT 5.1 (2000 is 5.0).

I'd go with Win2k, WinXP sucks for the same reasons WinME does, plus MS authorized activation is really lame. And Win98 is going to be outdated. NT5 is the way Microsoft is headed for everything, and Win2k is a better NT5 than WinXP is. Upcoming games will be optimized for NT5, and current games if you have good Win2k drivers aren't much slower than in Win2k.

The only reason I can think of to stay with Win98 is if you have a Radoen because ATi has absolute sh*t for driver support and their Win2k drivers blow.

By the way, FFMCobalt, I use WinME and have had very few problems. The only consistent problems I have are the system hanging in two different situations: after being in sleep mode and when shutting down. These could be related to the BIOS settings, though, I need to screw around with the power management settings a bit.

Other than that, it has been as stable for me as Win98SE was, although I am not much of a gamer. Maybe I am one of the lucky few?

FFMCobalt - lol, I was about a couple seconds away from asking the same thing when I finally realized what it was. I've never heard of it refered to as FE before.

I say 2k, dont even LOOK at WinME.
Its a poor "upgrade" to win98se.
ME acts just like 98, but it crashes more and it frags your HDD twice as much ;)

I run ME at home. Its fine, boots fast and no crashes, although i did have some problems till i upgraded my joystick driver. Since then not a single freaking crash. Its fast and stable, and thats fine with me. I bet most people who have ME problems have driver/ME problems. No problems with dial-up connections, no problems what so ever. I would agree it ain't worth the upgrade, BUT if you have to buy one or the other, or neither for some reason. Then cost isn't an issue.
