Winme... not the best upgrade

Winme in my opinion, wasn't worth the upgrade. It really didn't add all that much, from what I can tell, the only major thing I liked about it was the faster boot time, but when you compare it to Win98, I think you will find theres not much difference.

The only thing I found that winme fixed were the winme/2000 program file installtion bugs that plagued a lot of win98 users, but then again why wouldn't it considering the new installer is designed for winme. In Winme, theres also a new feature "system restore", although this could be useful, its a major rescource hogger, and is too big of a performance hit and basically just becomes an annoyance. Most users end up disabling this anyway, and that still just leaves you with a faster booot time.. and what else? a newly refined start menu! lol.. I formatted and am now back on win98, winme did have its pro's,but for some reason I just liked the "feel"
of Win98 more, even tho there both very identical 😉

Dude, let me tell you something: System Restore is a real hardware enthusiast's wet dream. That puppy has saved my ass when overclocking countless times. Nothing gives the confidence to try that registry-destroying push for higher speed like the ability to fix it perfectly when you push too hard. System Resource hog? By a real hard drive, and you won't have to think about it. Plus, considering it doesn't actually DO anything except in the middle of the night or when you tell it to, I don't see how it could be a performance hit.

Yeah, I miss the old 98 icons and stuff, too, but I'm not complaining.

System hog can potentially hog a huge amount of your hard drive, 200 meg being the minimum. I prefer to remove as much crap out of my system as i can.Personanlly i found WinME to be less reliable and slower than both Win98SE and Win2k.

I guess i have a pretty good knowledge of exporting and fixing registry errors, but i can see how some people would love Sys Restore.

I love the fast boot, but until a second release of Winme comes out i will be steering clear of it

I used it, I loathed it, I went to 2K. So far, I love 2K; it's been better than win98se even. After I got the UT Win2K issues ironed out it's been just fine.

Yeah, I'm not going to say I wouldn't use 98 if I knew enough to fix the registry myself. And yes, 2K is better than ME, but it's better than 98, too. Sort of in a league of it's own. 🙂

We should all remember that ME does share a great idea with win 2K. You can not over write system .DLLs. As everyone knows, this stacks up to stability. If that was the only upgrade, then I think it was well worth it.

Fix the registry yourself? Well in Win98 it's as easy as boot to dos, scanreg /restore. Easy enough. 🙂
