WInME modem problems-getting desperate

Argghhhh!!

I am using a(soon to be replaced) Motorola 56k V.90 external modem and (soon to be replaced) WinME.

When i dial up to my ISP i very often get this problem.

-Disconnected from computer you dialled

or, more commonly

- The modem will hang on verifying name and password. Eventually it will stop responding. When i drop out and try to reconnect again, it says another program is using my internet connection. I have to reboot

- I also get random disconnections, or my internet connection will stall for a minute or more and then there will be a flurry of activity, then it will stall again

Any help would be appreciated. I am hoping it is a modem thing (fixed by $$), but if it is anything else i would appreciate advice. I have had the lines checked and changed my cables. I have also tried a free ISP and get the same problems. I had no problems under Win98 (so maybe it isnt the modem🙁 )

First thing that I would try is to install the Win98 drivers. You may have to do some extra work if Me will tells you that they are not signed and therefore it will not install them. The way to bypass the signed driver issues. When installling don't let it search the location. Browse straight to the inf and once you select it you will get an advanced button. Click on the adv button and in the next pane you will have the option of disabling the driver signing.
