Min ME more stable they say?? Well not yet at least. After a format this weekend, I decided to do a fresh install of WinMe to give it a whirl. Everything thing went fine until I actually made it into windows. After that, my CD drives no longer appeared, the 3rd HD was missing from the hardware setup and all because of the IDE bus master. After several attempts to load drivers for the bus master it finally loaded after a power brown out. Computer buzzed back to life and mysteriously the IDE bus master had been jolted (?) back into working order. And yes I had restarted computer after each driver load attempt.
OK. With all drivers for video sound and other various devices in order, I decided to do some benching on the now clean HD. 3DMark 2000 ran ok...unitl the CPU speed test. Lock up. Ok. Maybe I need to "break" it in. Restarted and ran it again. As soon as I click the benchmark button the monitor screen showed a garbled mess.
Woah! Weird. Rebooted, tried again. Same. Loaded a game and the moment I start the game...garbled mess. Must be AGP chipset drivers. Loaded those again and back to normal.
Anyhow, on to other things. IE works fine....sometimes. It'll lock up once and a while. It has been updated also. And after evrytime the mahine locksup, I HAVE to reload the AGP drivers. Every single solitary time.
To date, I have reloaded the drivers 5 times since Sunday afternoon. That means 5 crashes in 2 days compared to Win98 with maybe a lockup a a week. Go figure.
