WinMe - Increasing the number of files that can be opened...

I have installed WinMe and it removed the files=100 from my config.sys. NOTE: WinMe will let you change the config.sys BUT when you reboot it sets it back to its own default per your system. I have a device driver for a soundcard which it keeps putting back into config.sys. You cann't change the config.sys and reboot, You cann't put a config.sys/.me/.nt in the system32 directory that has any affect. Someone has suggested that I modify the registry like NT. But no one seems to know how that is done or where/what to put into registry. HHHEEEELLLLLPPPP please...

WinME is supposed to dynamically allocate the number of files open. If you want to exert some form of control over this, go into the System Properties and change the role of the computer to Network Server.

If the problem is with the number of files you can keep open, then don't worry about it... Win ME (and Win98) dynamically change that and your silly "files=" statement does nothing.

If you're worried about the Device Driver. Personally, I just DELETE the config.sys on my Win98SE machines and the system still works fine.

I don't know if that'll work for you.

try moving it and all the config.* files with it to someplace to see if it works ok without destroying it.

I have my machine setup as network server and when I run my application it comes up with an error message that it cann't open up enough files to continue processing. And with Win98 I had the files= statement and my apps worked fine. NOW with WinMe, I don't know how to change the number of files available for opening. My apps still error out. WinMe will not let you remove/change config.sys other than what it thinks you need.
