Ok, I'm sure this is a basic question, but my knowledge of, and experience with, winME are, thankfully, quite small. Sadly, this means I need to swallow my pride and ask my question...

My friend has a sony Vaio (FX150) running a factory installed copy of winME...she's had it for a few years, so naturally it's starting to act up. I told her that if she's going to clean up and start from scratch she ought to load 98se, of which I own a spare license from an older system i got rid of...soooo, my question is, Sony's site links to ME, 2000, and XP drivers for her system; will the "original ME drivers" that came with her system work with 98se?

That question stands as a generic question (ME drivers ok for 98se?) and can also be broken down if anyone wants the specific component details...will some components work while others won't? should I expect problems with, say, sound, but not video? what kind of performance hit, if any, would i take overall?

Again, if anyone wants a list of parts im going to be dealing with i can provide it...also, if anyone has a sony vaio fx150 (or PCG-FX100, PCG-FX120/FX140/FX150) and has installed 98se on it please chime in :)

Thanks in advance...

If shes had her system runnin for a few years without any major issuses, why change to Win98.
It could backfire on you and she could have more problems with 98...... then how would ya feel.
Personally i wouldn't mess with it, if she has a restore disk that came with system get her back up and runnin and leave it be....IMO.

problem is, she doesnt have the disks that came with the system...they're at home, she's at school. computer's been acting up a lot lately, so she knows she'd really like to have this taken care of now (as opposed to march, when she'd next go home-and especially before the semester's workload gets higher). so, though i didnt really mention this before, she's almost stuck putting 98se on.

Any ideas how use-able ME drivers are for 98se? thanks

If you were going to convert it, the first thing you should do is go into the device manager in ME and look at all the various devices listed. Most should be industry standards that would offer generic drivers. An example would be if it's using an intel chipset, you could get that driver from them. If you can't find drivers for everything, you might have troubles. There were a few computer makers that used devices that drivers for 98 where not issued. You might be able to get ME drivers to work in 98, but it would not be a sure bet. If Sony doesn't list 98 drivers, you may not have full use of the various power saving software features that came with it originally. I think it could be done, but how much time are you willing to put in to it? Reloading ME would probably easier.

I just got back from taking a look at the system, and I found the ME cabs in the windows directory; I'd say that makes my job much easier :)

thanks for the advice
