WinLIRC vs Girder vs uICE vs others?

I just got an X10 Lola.

all this remote software stuff is confusing me. could somebody please briefly explain how they all compare, and how they work?

I think you need to find some reviews about them (google "<appname> review")
personally I use uICE and it is a very good program and definetly worth its price.

I'm brand new to the whole remote control thing, so I was hoping somebody could just give me a general overview of how they work (I know some use tcp/ip somehow, etc), and what the differences (if any) are between the different programs, like what kinds of applications each one is good for, etc
