My dad fell into the WinFire trap by signing up for the $20/month DSL plan and paying for the set-up fee. Before he could get his DSL up and running, WinFire decided to go out of business, however. He is in the Atlanta area. Can anyone recommend a reliable, fast DSL provider that charges $20-$30 per month?

*sniff* I too fell into the winfire trap. I guess offering things for free isn't very good for business. I did the $20 a month thing and have been on dsl for more than a month and then it went bye-bye. On tuesday they're supposed to have the steps ready to transfer dsl users to another carrier. I hope it's a good carrier and I have no idea what they will do to the price. Since nothing ever works out, I'm sure it'll be expensive :(

i too fell into the winfire trap. BUT, winfire and pacbell have opened my eyes. dsl is too darn new, the technology isn't very stable, well not in my area anyways. so what i did was this:

on friday, i called up my local cable provider isp
the tech guy was here saturday, and i was up and running

so right now i'm getting sub 100 pings at distant servers, while i receive sub 50 pings at local servers in counterstrike. my downloads are capped at around 90k, but that beats the 40k with winfire's 20 dollar plan. i currently pay 30 dollars.

Having DSL was very nice, although you bring up an interesting point. DSL is one of those things that is almost too good to be true. It took me 6 months to get a line installed because pacbell was swamped with requests. I finally get it and soon thereafter my provider goes bye bye. It hasn't gone too smoothly, no, but when it works it is very nice.

I'm kind of glad Winfire never got around to finishing the activation for me, but now I have a DSL modem I bought separately untouched in my house. What a waste of money...
