Winfire DSL, Quality/value and modems

I just got a message from Winfire Free DSL notifying me that I qualify for free DSL. They offer 3 or 4 service levels, the one I'm considering is $19.95/mo with $100 rebate, so effectively $11.60/mo. They claim "With the DSL Power package, you get access speeds up to 384 kbps and NO banner ads in the Winfire toolbar.", Is this believable? They want me to buy their modem at $199.00 regardless of service level. They offer free DSL if I want banner ads but I don't think I do. Anyone have any experience with this company and their modem? Is the modem proprietary? This looks like a reasonable deal I'm just not sold yet, any input?
Thanks, Matt

Ive ordered there Full package $34 dollars this is a great deal i get 3months free service no charge and free modem and installation full speed no caps and i only live 4000 feet from my CO so its gonna be fast I have found no cheaper than that most others are in the 40dollar range.

11.60 for 384 service is great, but do you have to buy their modem? Reason I ask is because I have an Alcatel 1000 already. What about length of contract? Do you have a link to their site with the full information?

Getting hooked up is the problem. I ordered Winfire in June and here it is December and still cant get it. They say it's my local phone company hasnt upgraded there equipment yet but I've heard rumors that they have been having trouble themselves.
I hope the rumors are false but the CSR told me on the phone that only 5000 people had been hooked up while 5,000,000 had signed up. I've been waiting for DSL or cable which ever comes first. I would still use Winfire if they could activate me because there service is suppose to be pretty good. There free dial-up is rock solid so I hope that there DSL is the same.

What toolbar?

You people are all extremely lucky. I recently got an email from them stating that my area doesn't support DSL... good luck. :disgust:

well, so far my line is activated, and they told me that the modem should be coming this week or next. the friggen back order on modems delayed my dsl for over two months. and you could search under my name for some cool info about winfire's software caps.

So the consensus is that they are an ok company? I'm really tempted to try them. I'll have to call them about the modem, I would think I could pick something up a little cheaper. I don't want to get another high monthly fee so the rebate makes the higher fee service attractive. I have free, decent, but slow, dialup now as a volunteer for our local freenet so I really can get by without it but.......😀
