WineX Install

Ok ran into this issue..

Before installing make sure you have the Mesa development package and the XFree86 development package installed.

?

I assume I don't.. Because the next step failed.

./tools/wineinstall

What exactly are these, where can I get them.

Which distro?
If rpm based look HERE.
If Debian based I'm sure apt-get has a search feature.

Hey no regrets dude :).

Anyway I think that this rpm should handle both mesa and xfree.

Good luck, and happy gaming :D

No way, dude. You mean to tell me that its CVS or bust. Ouch, well in that case could you post the results of your expedition here when you're done. My last try of winex was before there was anyway to deal with the installshield's, but anyway if you need anykind of help the forums are always there.

By the way, how come you can't dual boot?

well one hd..

dont like to have m$ and linux coexist on single drive.

Then newest issue..

when trying to instal package XFree86-4.2.0-72.src.rpm

unlocatable package: pam = 0.75-40 require by: pam-devel

I HATE this cutesy WINDOWSISH Package manager. I need something that has a searchable database.. Not this POS. Is there anything that might help me with this?

Heres pam for ya. If you still have any dependancy problems you might want to scroll down the web page of the first link that I gave you. It lists all of the rpms required, but since pam is the only thing that you need I'm thinking that you should be fine.

BTW, it really was alot easier in mandrake. All I had to do was type "urpmi mesa-devel" (e.g. no more rpm hell), is red hats package manager that simplified. I honestly hate mandrake's rpm management gui, but there is a work-around for mandrake's, unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with red hat to post any thoughts on their rpm manager.

:D Because you didn't ask....

Seriously though the whole process is always a lot easier if you have already compiled programs with similar requirements, or if you have a really killer package manager. Either that or you just like installing programs. Some may say I'm kinda nuts but I really love collecting all the cool open source apps (especially the games :p.)

EDIT: I just started downloading winex for myself.

you using the cvs then too?

Yup, as a matter of fact I am. As a matter of fact I'm downloading the newest CVS right now.

, there were so many changes since I last downloaded it that I have fetch the CVS all over again.

But anyway, after a quick glance at some of the changes I can definitely say that the entire thing has been rehauled. This is all for the better though, because originally the cvs was just a really old version of wine with a transgaming sticker stuck on it.

Since on Frank's Corner it says that you can use i6comp to deal with installshield and I can probably locate no-cd patches for my favorite games, I think I will enjoy this :D

Ok heres the chant.

Installed the XF83-devel package.

Here

After running ./tools/wineinstall I get the following output:

*** Warning: X development files not found. Wine will be built without
*** X support, which currently does not work, and would probably not be
*** what you want anyway. You will need to install devel packages of
*** Xlib/Xfree86 at the very least.

I guess this means i am missing something? Should I countinue with make depend && make?

MS

Eternally frustrated yet still interested franks corner instructions

, dude that sucks.

If you downloaded the package that I gave you the link for than I don't see how this could be happening. Make sure that the xfree86 library is properly installed. To do this at the command line just type "rpm -q xfree86". If you don't see the package there than that means that something happened with the install.

If all else fails, I recommend that you reconsider dual booting. You don't have to erase you're linux partition in order to get windows. Parted works quite well for shrinking already made partitions, and you don't have to worry about defragmenting because ext2 doesn't have a lot of data fragmentation.

You should definitely try the command line (i.e. rpm -iUh [Package Name]). That should work.

rpm -iuh? thats not a valid switch to my knowledge

i used rpm -ivh.. here are the results of that..

I have all the required devel environs to do this.. With the exception of this.. which is really pissing me off. It sucks that a company would charge for a binary. I would just buy a copy but my father would never allow me to, he would just say: Use windows. Thats what its here for!.. Linux isn't for games.

My dad is smart but he doesnt understand why I want to accomplish this.. The amusment factor is soo worth it.

Bingo, now I see what the problem is. You see, the xfree86 source package and the xfree86 development libraries are not the same thing. What you need to download is , this rpm which contains both mesa devel and the xfree86 libraries. And then winex should definitely compile.

Speaking of compile, winex takes atleast 1 and a half hours to compile on my 700mhz system. If yours is any slower than that you may want to pop in a really good movie.

On the other hand, I just got my winex cvs compiled and I'm about to try and get some games working, this should be interesting I hope.

Edit: Wrong site.

:D, well anyway I dug myself into a deep trench with my last motherboard upgrade. It doesn't support cpus higher than 1.1 ghz, and it maxes at 512 mb of pc-133 ram.

This means that in order for me get what I want (over 2 ghz) I need to replace the chip, memory, and board. Frankly put, I seriously don't want to do that right now....

Ohh nevermind, yeah I what to upgrade.

Must....... get..... more.......... cash......................
