Please keep up the suggestions,I'm new to the Reds and am trying to discover which ones I like best,I'd like to find a couple of good Red's in a price range that makes for an afforadable regular table wine, but I also have no problem spending more for a good wine for special occasions:)

My favorite dinner:
Prime rib with hot horse raddish, garlic mashed potatoes, spinach and Merlot (sometimes Cab). Top it off with something chocolate for desert. Chocolate and red wine go well together.

It all depends on what you like, and what you're having with the wine. A bottle of nice pinot noir from Willamette Valley, like one of my personal favorites in mid-range price wines, Domaine Droughin (~$30, or better yet try to get a bottle of their 1998 reserve label "Laurène"), or Cristom (~$30, when i can get it), might be just the ticket for a nice meal. Or it might be a simple bottle of cheap pinot griggio might be what's appropriate for a simple evening sitting on the porch relaxing. The bottle of viognier which would go perfectly with a curry dish would be underwhelming to say the least in a dinner featuring a nice cut of beef. Merlot or shiraz would work well with rack of lamb, Gewurztraminer wouldn't. It's just a matter of finding out what works for you... say if you like drinking Riesling with your meal (even if the wine snobs say it wouldn't match), then go for it. Sometimes what the meal or occasion calls for is a wine which seems counter-intuitive. Just try some different varieties and see what works for you. No need to spend more than $10-20/bottle (with the sweet spot being around 15) in your experimentation phase, and when you find something you like you can explore more expensive and nicer versions of it.

I only like red wine so i drink it with everything. Chicken, fish, etc. I don't care if the snobs turn up their nose at me, I drink what I like. :)
