Windws XP can't get to COM2

I was running 98SE with a 56k modem showing up on COM2. It ran OK

I switched to XP. It does not automatically recognize the modem. I tried to add it but COM2 would not come up for installation.

I keep reading about a "legacy" device vs PnP. What is teh difference and how can I tell which one I have.

Any help would be appreciated.
