windshield question

Have a 12in.+ crack dead center (horizontal) on my windshield. I'm reading it can't be repaired if it's longer than 6in. How much do windshields usually go for ? I can't even look it up since sites like carparts.com don't sell it. I only have liability insurance so that won't cover it...

It's a 95 Rodeo SUV. Originally started with a dime size crack... and a couple years later I guess the cold/warmth climate change finally got to it... lesson learned: repair small problems before they turn into big ones.

Also, anyone happen to know the law specifics on driving with cracked windshields ?

By not having it repaired ASAP. Moisture was permitted to get in, freeze, expand and the crack grew.

Locate a good use OEM windshield and have it installed using a new rubber mounting gasket as the old gasket will be hard and may leak next winter. OER windshilds never seem to be as good as OEM.

mine was cracked since I bought it (sentra), then a few days ago we washed the car and it was very hot outside. I got in the car and realized that the crack had spread (was 6 inches prior to wash!). It's now the entire length of the windshield from top to bottom, about 8 inches from the passenger's side. Frankly I've no interest in replacing it. Is it a big fine, or is it even illegal at all? This is AL, so I don't expect to get a ticket

One of the more reputable places (Safelite Auto Glass) quoted me $312 for a replacement while another (linked above - American Patriot Glass) quoted me $200 for a replacement. Both are supposed to be OEM and come to you to fix it. Both companies have a good standing with the BBB.

Any particular reason you can think of as to why there would be such a huge price discrepancy ?

I don't know, but $200 sounds better to me. the other place probably just charges outrageous amounts for labor. or it's possible that one includes a warranty and one doesn't.

Insurance covers auto glass replacement and if you have a low enough deductible, the glass shop will even cover that as well.

nah my insurance is liability only. The deductible would be too high anyway... I asked for a quote on glass coverage... was outrageous.

it's covered under comprehensive in your insurance. and you might not even pay the deductible. and there's no penalty to claiming it

The only reasons I can think of for the huge price difference would be either a warranty difference or perhaps Safelite doesn't understand that there would be no insurance claim involved. There is a huge difference between the cost of a windshield that you want to pay cash for and a windshield that an insurance company is going to pay for.

Don't know the law concerning private vehicles. In a commercial motor vehicle we say that if you can't cover the crack with a dollar bill then you are illegal.

Safelite did ask about insurance and I told them cash. They came back with $312. :| They did give me the option of getting the tinted top 5 inches or none at all (which I currently have) - same price for both. The other place didn't even ask... just asked what model/year and came back with the price.

Is it a no-brainer to get the tinted top if it's the same price ? Why didn't I have that option when I bought the car ?

This has nothing to do with anything really, but I just called Safelite and got a quote of 217.53 for that windshield. Like you say - same price whether you get 5 inches of sunshade or not.

Wouldn't give an insurance quote because each insurer has their own negotiated price.

Must be the price you pay for living on Long Island.

Thanks for taking the time to call also. I called again and asked about the $112 price difference and they said they can bring it down to $255 w/ molding or $241 just the windshield. They did also mention the price differs by region/safelite shop. It's a tough call... I had service with this company before and they were great. Not sure about the $200 place even though they look respectable also...

Well if you want the details... when I inquired about getting glass coverage, they said it was at least $200 deductible... what's the point of that ?
