Is the paid version noticeably better than the free version? I tested it and stopped using it, even free was too much to pay.

That it's essentially impossible to get a connection that doesn't fail inside of 6 minutes. A VPN is worthless if you're using it to hide your identity and you can't even get up to take a piss without the connection punting and leaving your IP exposed. A VPN has one freaking job and Windscribe did that so poorly that it was not worth using free of charge.
 
Um, in setting you can set it up the firewall to protect you from it not being on, and the year I have had it I may have had to change locations because of slow down, maybe 3-4 times, other then that its been totally rock solid, and SOOOOOOO many choice of where to connect to its amazing. The troubles you describe hasnt ever been a problem for me at all.
