Hi there,

Im not sure if this is a reoccurring problem or not, but Ive tried 3 different versions of WindowsXP now and all of them seem to stick on formatting my laptops hard drive, all at 57%. I figured it was actually hardware driven, and the thing was already having trouble, so I sent it to the manufacturer. He fixed the other hardware related problems, formatted it and installed WindowsXP fine. I received it yesterday and am going to format it today, and as I am doing so, it just doesn't go anywhere after 57%.... anyone else seen anything like this?

I thought that too, but the guy who repaired it over the phone said he formatted it three times and installed three times without a problem.

Hi,

Maybe it's your laptop. Can you find another computer on which you can verify it formats ok?

Good luck,

Andy

It seems to format ok on other computers, but again, I reiterate, that the guy formatted the machine and installed 3 times, *this* exact machine, so Im not sure what it could be...

Hi,

A tricky one - your observations appear to contradict what the tech guy said. Can you download and run the diagnostic tool for the hdd manufacturer?

Good luck,

Andy

Yeah, Ill try that, Im also wondering if maybe there is another way to format the drive, perhaps with some software other than windows. I dont have a floppy drive with it however, so it has to be CD driven

Hi,

I *guess* the Knoppix linux distro (CD based linux distro) has fdisk installed. You could use that maybe?

Cheers,

Andy

Well just ended the "format" and to my surprise, it actually did format the disk, it just didnt update what was going on, so I installed windows over the directory it tried to install windows to originally and now its going. Very weird..

Hi,

All's well that ends well. One thing - even though it wasn't updating the display, you could still here the format process occuring from the HD itself?

Cheers,

Andy
