WindowsXP cannot read CDs from CD Drive (does not detect CD in drive)

My decade-old brand-name Toshiba 4x CDROM drive is able to read both data and audio CDs.
My newer no-name 36x CDROM drive is able to read audio CDs, but not data CDs.
My newest Samsung 48x CDROM drive is able to read audio CDs, but not data CDs.

Suggestions on how to get the newer drives to work?
[*]Do you think this could be because I don't have drivers specific to the CDROM drive that I'm using? (I thought that the standard Windows XP CDROM drivers would work and don't even know if I have specific drivers).
[*]I tried the Windows Hardware Troubleshooter and it was unable to resolve my problem. It suggested that the CD drives might be broken. From your experience, is this behaviour consistent with a broken CD drive?

i'm having similiar problems

my LTR 52 24 6S cannot read any type of CDs, when i insert a CD and i try to open it up it asks for "insert a CD" although i have already inserted a CD.

i have updated my motherboards chipset....i have an nVidia chipset and i have updated my BIOS, the CD-RW has the latest firmware

nothing works and it all started after i put in the audio CD1 cable

it's a pain! some other ppl had the same problems and he said the lite on technical support said the drive is dead!

i just don't see how the drive can turn dead because i plugged the cd1 audio cable into it....i mean that's what it is for!

when you can get a new cdrom drive for around 10 dollars. why not just get a new one and test it out? when you see symptoms like that the drive is probably dead

I had the same problem with my brand new LG 52x cdrw burner when i brought it home.
I too thought it was hardware until i read somewhere to try and change the cd drive letter. I did this whith skepticism and to my surprise i was able to see everything on my cd finally. May work for you!!
This is an XP prob i think
