Maybe WindowsME is suppose to do this, but i'm not sure.. I only have been running it for about 5 days. Everytime I start windowsME it will write this to the autoexec.bat file:

SET windir=C:\WINDOWS
SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
SET COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
SET PROMPT=$p$g
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

I have tried deleting the autoexec.bat file, when I start windowsME, the file comes back with those settings in it. Also, everything was running fine when I first got the computer, but now, when I start WindowsME it comes to the screen with the icons and everything and then it will stay there for about 1 minute or so, I can move the mouse but I can't click on anything, then after 1 minute or so passes, it does whatever I clicked on... it's like it is lagged by a minute or so.. kinda weird.. it just started happening though.. i'm thinking that it might be writing the autoexec.bat file and thats why it is lagged when it starts?

Sounds like you did an "Upgrade" to ME. 9x does a CRAP Job of upgrading.

Based on where you are now, one of two suggestions.. Both involve Formatting.

Windows 2000 (fresh install)
Windows Me (fresh install)

Upgrading 9x with 9x is CRAP! Oh, did I say that already? ;)

[edit] No, Me is Not supposed to do that... something is fuct. Like I said, Me is not a good upgrade OS. It does much better with a fresh install. [/edit]

Here are a few things to try (besides reformatting which should definitely fix it)

1. IRQ conflicts. Download SiSoft Sandra, and check the IRQ section, see if your video card is sharing with your mouse or something crazy that Windows is taking a long time to figure out each time it loads.

2. Driver issues. Press Winkey+Pause and make sure all your drivers are correct. Get the latest versions for everything...

3. Highpoint controller issues. Man, those HPT controllers have been nothing but problems and troubles for me. I have to drive up to Salem to fix my mom's computer, it seems that it randomly locks up now that I changed it over to the highpoint last time I was home. Dumb move... Back to the ATA/33 which is more stable.

4. The settings in the autoexec shouldn't effect anything, so don't worry

5. It might be something loading on startup that you don't know about. Start->Run->Msconfig click on Startup tab, and remove programs like Office FastFind, Adobe Gamma correction, and any antivirus programs. You can always reenable something if you break it... but this will help narrow down the problem.

6. Too high of an overclock. One of your PCI cards is freaking cos the PCI bus is too high.

7. Ram settings set to 2,2,2 at too high of a bus speed. Try dropping your ram timings to 3,3,3 and see if that helps.

That's about all I can think of right now. Hope one of those helps. Otherwise, see the post above =/

actually i think its suppose to do that
im pretty sure that i had the same "problem" off of a fresh instal
and dont forget that ms has hidden real mode dos and adding lines to the autoexec wont make a difference
