Windows98SE is not shutting down. It just reboots. Cannot fix it. Help!

I check SHUT DOWN and it actually restarts. No lie. I have no idea why.

I recently installed PC Accellerator 6000 and didn't like it, so I uninstalled it, and I cannot get it out of my startup file (I run msconfig and it is still there for some reason). It's unchecked, of course. Have no idea if this is what is the problem. I also removed Motherboard Monitor 5, which was installed the same day as the above program.

I played with the settings in my MSCONFIG, but nothing changes.

Can anyone help me with this? It really is driving me crazy and making me worried about the stability of my system, which is a brand new install of Win98SE. Here is a screen cap of my Startup...

Has it ever shutdown (i.e., powered down)? If it never has:
1) Only ATX style power supplies and motherboards that support "power off" will obey the command.
2) Some motherboards that 'support it' are different enough that Windows cannot shut it down. In that case, it just reboots.

If it used to: Sorry, I can't help there.

do a search, maybe some remants are left from your uninstall.

disable fast shutdown (in msconfig, general, advanced).

if all this doesn't work, i have found a quick overinstall of the OS will solve the problem.

Good Luck,

baldy

Timothy, yes, it was shutting down just fine before I installed those two programs. Then it started acting strange. It starts to shut down, then simply reboots, like I hit the reset button.

Baldy, I disabled Fast Shutdown and it didn't work. It just reboots slower. 🙁

Onverinstalling Win 98SE? How would that work and what would it remove, replace, etc? I don't want to reinstall any of my ATI or motherboard drivers. No way. Those ATI drivers are one reason I am on a brand new fresh install of Windows 98SE and not WinME. I had to format and start from scratch.

Please explain. Thanks

First I'd start looking around for remnants of those programs.
msconfig is a start.
Look in your startup folder, autoexec.bat and config.sys files.
Remove 'em or REM 'em.
I'd also shutdown ANY power mgmt stuff, in windows and in BIOS.

The PC ACCEL 6000SE is still in my Startup (check out the scan) and I have no idea how to get it out of there. Can anyone tell me how?

Right click on your toolbar to bring up Taskbar properties.
Click start menu programs.
Click advanced.
Double click programs.
Click Startup.
Click the shortcut that you want to remove, hit delete key.
Click X to close screen.
Click OK.

Nothing in the startup folder?
Then the program wouldn't start at bootup...
Usually you'll see stuff in the startup folder like antivirus,
office menu, etc.....
But programs can be in the autoexec.bat and config.sys also...
Greg

Yeah, nothing. I'm on my work computer and there's nothing in this start folder either. There must be a setting in Windows to hide the icons or something.
