Hi there, I hope someone can't help out with this...

I'm running Windows98SE on a Abit KA7 mb with the lastest via drivers. I have 512 megs of PC133 ram installed. After opening just one or two IE windows and MSN messenager, my system resources are down to 40 or less.....was at 14% once. What gives with this? I know win98 has problems with over 512 megs of ram but could having that much cause this kind of problem?

You may have a lot of programs running in the background or in system tray, such as RealPlayer SmartStart and stuff like that. Disable what you can from the system tray, and then get rid of any useless services using StartUp Control Panel.
