Windows95 with HP Deskjet 420 problem

Could anybody help me with this problem?
My old mother is using Windows 95 with a HP Deskjet 420 printer.
Since a few days the following problem occures:
When she wants to print a page, the printer switches off and Windows gives (of course) a printing error.
I tried several things. disconnecting en reconnecting cables, re-install the (latest) driver, but nothing works.
Anybody an idea?
