Wanted to share this if anyone has had a problem with Windows 8 recognizing usb drives that are plugged in to usb hubs:
I have 2 external hubs plugged into my desktop.
1- Taurus 9 key pad that has 2 usb ports
2- Gigaware 4 port powered usb hub 26-160.
A direct copy/paste from my notes:
-Open Device Manager
-Scroll down and find Universal Serial Bus controllers
-Expand that
-1st thing listed are 2 Generic USB Hub
-- One of those is for my Targus 9 key pad which has 2 usb ports built-in.
-- Other one is the Gigaware hub for my external USB LG dvd r/w drive, Mybook 500g hd, Mybook 1t hd.
- Right click and uninstall both of those hubs. No worries, Win8 will find both later.
- Scroll further down and see there is 1 USB Mass Storage Device listed. Thats my main culprit. When my mybook's are disco'd from the Gigaware hub; but my LG r/w dvd usb drive is still plugged in. That's "jamming-up" Windows8 somehow.
- Right click and uninstall that USB Mass Storage Device.
- On the LG r/w dvd usb drive, unplug then plug back in its power.
- Windows8 will "tone" indicating it's seen a new device and boom you'll hear the LG dvd r/w and Win8 "talking" to each other.
- Now plug in the 2 "mybooks" usb plugs into that hub and boom, You'll hear them and Win8 "talking".
- Notice now there are 3 USB Mass Storage Device's listed (the dvd and 2 hd's)
- Notice also back at the top of the list 1 Generic USB Hub has appeared.
- At his point you can right click "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and select "Scan for hardware changes".
-Win8 will find/add the other Generic USB Hub.which is my "Taurus 9 key pad w/ 2 usb ports".
- If you check, Drive Manager will now have the dvd and 2 hd's listed.
- If you check, Windows Explorer will now have the dvd and 2 hd's listed.
- Will not require a re-boot.
