I am currently running Windows XP Professional on my machine, but I need to connect to a Windows2000 Server machine. I was told to install windows2k server, which would ask if I would like to make 2 floppies to install windows2k "client". I'm sort of confused about all of this. Is there a way to use WinXP to use the Win2k Server machine?

Thanks

I can not figure out exactly what you are trying to ask, but if you are saying that you want to connect to a Windows 2000 Server-based Terminal Services server, you can just use the Remote Desktop Client that is included with Windows XP. For file and printer access, you also don't need any special software. Joining your workstation to an Active Directory domain is somewhat beyond what I can tell you how to do (I tried it once with my Win2k server and WinXP workstation at home, and it didn't work too well ), but does not require the installation of any special software, either.

What are you trying to do?

Terminal service (WTS/RDP) -- Win2k Server have built in TS services: Goto Add/Remove Programs & add "Terminal Services" ++ "Terminal Services Licencing".

Printer/Filesharing -- You can share them is a workgroup environment or AD.

Sorry for not being clear before, but this is what I'm trying to do:

Control the computer running Win2k Server (it has to do with terminal server) remotely from my WinXP computer. I'm very new to this so I'm not sure what to do. I was told do install the win2k terminal client, without detailed information, in order to access the computer running win2k. I already have winxp pro installed on my dell assembeled laptop and would rather not reinstall a new OS.

So I guess i'm just wondering how to access the win2k machine with my winxp.

Thanks so much!

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection

...then enter the name or IP address of the system that you want to connect to, and set the other settings as necessary. (RDC is a terminal services client, so you don't need to install anything new)

That would be the way you do it, but the RDP client has to be install if weren't install previously.
Also the Win2k server TS service & licensing has to be installed, and configured. The user access local & remote access will also need to be configured.

Best bet is to get a book or read the crapy how to setup TS services at MS website. (I wish MS people learn how to write man page, because they confuses the reader by having chapters on a subject that could be explain in a page).
