When i try to install windows 2k and during the "finding components to install" section of the installation...the installation just stops and this screen comes up telling me that "hardware malfunction...pls contact your vendor." The only reason i decided to upgrade to 2k is because my mom kept complaining that the computer kept locking up and freezing up on her...often. Here are the specs for the computer:
1.0 AMD 266FSB
MSI K7t turbo
Crucial 256 @ pc 133
ATI Rage 128
20gigs maxtor HD

Okay...so far i know it is not a HD problem...because i installed the HD from a friend's computer and the computer kept freezing and stuff. So therefore...i'm thinking it could be a mobo or chip? I really doubt that too...

PLEASE HELP ME!!!...I have no idea what is wrong...any kind of help will do...thanks in advance!

It might be your ram that's causing the problem. Crucial is normally good ram, but they have
different kinds as well. Some of their value 256mb sticks use cheap quality ram chips that are
sometimes incompatible with different boards and can cause freezups. I'd suggest trying a friends
chip for testing. Try something with either Micron or Infineon chips on it for best results. :)

Had the same exact problem with the MSI 6330...Kt7
It hangs up when setting up the devices and then blue screens

Two things I did:
1. Disable onboard sound(Until OS is installed then u can enable it)
2. Set "Assign IRQ to VGA" to disabled (Until OS is installed then u can enable it)

Worked for me without any probs.......

Pure B.S., Crucial is a division of Micron and uses only Micron chips.

Try doing your install with only the minimum of hardware and installing the rest of your stuff after win2k is installed. If you are overclocking...don't until you're done.

Got a similiar setup 3 wks ago same exact problem. The problem was resolved updating the BIOS
to the latest. I accidentally found out because the latest supposedly fixes some DVD player problem for win98 SE,(which it didn't,) but fixed the win2k install. BTW, you must update to the latest service packs for optimum performance.

I did not change Assign IRQ to VGA to disable, FYI.

(I saw a similiar post 3 wks ago, but I couldn't respond until I joined, by then I couldn't find the post.)

I never got the DVD to work under Win98SE but it works under Win2k. Win2k is extremely reliable.
Boy this system screams, yours should too!!
