Hey all. I'm running a Win2K Pro box , and am looking into upgrading. My main priority is sound quality - and this is where I have some questions. In Windows98, I know you needed the analog cable from the CD/DVD drive to the sound card if you wanted to play audio CD's. However, I heard that in Windows2000 this is unnecessary, and that the OS will use the digital IDE channel and the DAC converter on the sound card as opposed to the CD / DVD drive. Can someone confirm or deny this? Secondly, does anyone know of a soundcard with an exceptional DAC ? Most CD / DVD drives use the cheapest ones they can find, and since the sound card has a dedicated processor I'm hoping the conversion quality will be better. And if I still do need the cable directly from the CD Rom drive to the sound card, are there any CD/ DVD drives with a digital audio out (internal) and a sound card to accept this? I've just started looking for specs, and from what I understand it won't be easy. Thanks for any help you can give.
