Windows XP's System Restore - how to keep it from immediately sticking files on new drives?

Windows XP Pro's System Restore function will automatically enable System Restore on any new, partitioned drive placed in a system. Sure you can disable it afterwards, but the initial writing can be especially destructive if you're trying to recover data from a drive.

Is there a registry setting that'll keep the System Restore from automatically messing around with new drives?

I think I might just shoot myself, but if I got a gun, I probably wouldn't be able to find the trigger.


I never once before saw that checkbox there that says "Turn off System Restore on all drives." I guess that'd probably do it. Yup. *sigh*

Still, what you ask is reasonable, a way to have it default to off for newly added drives without giving up protection completely. It does disable for removable drives, so perhaps for recovery use one of those usb->ide converters?

Yeah, yeah!

Would be nice, because with USB -> IDE convertors, you can't see the SMART readout, plus you just don't get the speed of the IDE interface, vs the USB -> IDE conversion.
