windows xp's stupid "different USB port means new hardware

It plagues us all. I wish there was a way around it. I have a device which requires a ~1 hour reinstall of software and recalibration if I accidently plug it into the wrong USB slot. I complained about this within a thread in GH and got flamed by people claiming it is a good thing.
